Taking the plunge – buying a home with a pool

October 11, 2012

In the DC metropolitan area, homes with swimming pools are not always easy to sell. Many listings do not include any mention of a pool and I’ve watched buyers turn and walk out once they see there is one. But as soon as the public pools close each year, I seem to attract a few clients who are interested in swimming pools. This year it seems many of my buyer clients are looking at houses with pools or looking at buying a home and installing a pool.

One of the things you need to know when looking to install a pool on a property is whether or not it can be done where you want it. When homes are on larger lots and have well water and septic systems, it is sometimes difficult to see where the systems and drainage fields are located when you are at the property. Here are a few resources to help you find the septic and well maps of your desired property.

Fairfax County, VA – Visit the Fairfax County Department of Health’s Environmental Health Section to Find the Office of Onsite Sewage and Water. If you’d like them to fax you the layout of the systems at a particular address, call 703-246-2201 and give them the address and your fax number.

Montgomery County, MD – Visit the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection page on Private Well and Septic Service to learn about these systems. To get a copy of the septic field map or well map, call the Montgmoery County Customer Service number at 240-777-0311 and a representative will send your request to the permitting office.

Loudoun County, VA – Loudoun County’s Department of Health has many resources on the Environmental Health Services Department’s Septic Systems page and offers a Frequently Asked Questions page that is also useful. However, to get a copy of the septic system or well map for a property, you must appear in person at the Health Department Office in the Government Center on 1 Harrison Street SE in Leesburg.
