The Best Time to Buy a New Vehicle

December 15, 2014

Real estate agents and mortgage lenders will tell you not to buy a car in between the ratification of a purchase contract on a home and the day of settlement. Changing your credit situation during that period of time can have a huge impact on your home financing. Mike Rabkin of From Car To FinishSo, when is the best time to go car shopping? Fellow consumer advocate, Mike Rabkin of From Car To Finish is the guest blogger here to answer that question.

When is the best time to buy a new vehicle?

The best time to buy a new vehicle will vary depending on the supply and demand of a vehicle. If it’s in demand and selling faster than they can get them in, it’s a seller’s market, and there is no best time, because the dealer sets the price if they have what everyone wants. However, when a vehicle needs help selling (which is the scenario most vehicles fall into), the end of the month is a good time to buy if negotiating the vehicle yourself, because sales managers at dealerships have a monthly quota to hit, and get compensated on whether they hit it or not. Therefore, the customer who comes in ready to buy at the end of the month may get a better deal if it helps put the manager over the top for their quota.

There are also annual quotas at the end of the calendar year, so same thinking applies then. Therefore, in the days leading up to the end of the month (or calendar year), dealers start getting worried about hitting their quota as the clock runs out, and will take some short deals to hedge their bets and make sure they hit their quota as needed.

Additionally, there can be temporary dealer rebates to clear out a model year (which these days can take place at any time of the year, as opposed to the fall, when it has traditionally changed over in the public’s mind), so dealers can sell a vehicle for less when they have the use of said incentives. These can be in the form of a flat rebate per vehicle sold, or a stair-step incentive, which requires a dealer to hit a pre-set sales target set by the manufacturer based on a specific dealer’s normal sales volume.
