Wanting to write local food reviews for many of the businesses I frequent, I started with a post about a downtown Bethesda sandwich shop called “Eating Lunch in Downtown Bethesda – Taylor Gourmet Deli.” I’d like to continue this series with a review of a Chinese Restaurant in the Westlake/Montgomery Mall neighborhood of Bethesda, Maryland.
When my children were young, we ate at Fu Shing Cafe quite often. The casual atmosphere and kid-friendly staff made the eating experience with children very enjoyable. As my children got older, I took them to Jade Billows, a local restaurant that recently closed down, causing local residents to wonder where to get their Chinese take-out. Many of my neighbors were impressed by the food at Fu Shing Cafe.
I decided to revisit Fu Shing Cafe and see if it might be the new go-to Chinese restaurant for my family. My family and I were pleasantly surprised by how good the food really was.
My daughters typically don’t care for very spicy food, but they decided to try the Orange Beef. I picked the hot peppers out when they weren’t looking and they devoured the dish quickly. When I sampled it, I thought it was very well cooked, and flavorful, but not too sweet and not too hot.
I selected the Kung Pao Chicken because I love spicy food and wanted to see if it had any heat. It was delicious and quite spicy. The chicken was tender, it included a good selection of fresh veggies, and it wasn’t drenched in a heavy sauce. It felt fresh and my daughters ate most of my mushrooms, so it wasn’t too hot. But the heat did build as I continued to eat.
All in all, we had a great meal and the service was friendly. My family will be returning to Fu Shing again soon. I’m especially happy to report that we have the good fortune to have a great go-to Chinese restaurant in our neighborhood for eat-in or carry out.
If you would like to visit Fu Shing Cafe in Bethesda, the address is 10315 Westlake Drive in Bethesda, MD and is located in a small shopping center just west of the Westfield Montgomery Mall.
