Eating in Alexandria – Waffle Shop in Potomac West

May 17, 2013

If you know me at all you know that I am a big fan of little dive bars and diners, especially quirky places that serve breakfast around the clock. My husband and I were regulars at the Waffle Cup of JoeShop near Metro Center in DC for many years and my friend Cindy and I have eaten breakfasts at truck stops and diners all over the United States.

I’ve worked as a waitress in a New Jersey Diner and as a bartender at a DC Dive Bar and I know the one thing that makes these places special – it’s the service. For me, service includes the rapport between the server and customer as well as the delivery of the food and drinks to the customer in a timely manner. I feel very strongly that diner patrons should not wait more than two minutes without being offered coffee.

Vintage_Corner_SignLast week I was showing homes in the Del Ray and Potomac West neighborhoods in Virginia and decided I needed a little breakfast food. I headed to Mount Vernon Avenue to a local dive with a banner outside that drives me crazy because it reads “WAFLE SHOP.”  Waffle is misspelled on both sides of this little corner restaurant and right next to their vintage Waffle Shop sign which is spelled correctly. Why they have not corrected it, I don’t know.

So, I go in and sit at the curved counter and look up and down at the customers. Across from the counter is a cook preparing some food on the grill. The waitress immediately approaches, gives me a menu and asks if I’d like anything to drink. Of course, I order a cup of joe and it is delivered right away.

The waitress is multi-tasking and I realize that she is speaking English to me and Spanish to some other customers. The cook motions to the waitress and she delivers the food to some people sitting to my right. They’ve ordered all kinds of dishes that look very good to me. Eggs, sausages, something smothered in tomatoes, but I already know what I want. Waffle and home fries as always.Wafle Shop Meal

I watch the cook pour the waffle batter into the waffle maker. Then he throws some potatoes on the grill next to some other orders that are in progress. When my food is ready, it is delivered and my coffee is refilled. I take a bite of my waffle before I remember to take a picture. It is hot and the butter and syrup are melting through just the way I like it. The home fries don’t have much flavor, but I add a little salt, pepper and hot sauce and then they are delicious. All in all, a very good meal.

Next time you’re in Potomac West and need a little breakfast, or the perfect remedy to a hangover, go and check out the Wafle Shop/Waffle Shop at 3864 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22305. You’ll get a tasty meal and friendly service.

Can’t wait to try the Waffle House. The misspelling of Waffle on the awning drives me crazy too.
